Hi Peter, I love this format…a potpourri of comic-related goodness! While podcasts with named specific to their content are nice for listening prioritization, the TDR Digest format allows for some surprises in the content. It’s the same reason I like CGS’ Comic Talk episodes and the Fire & Water Network’s FW Presents episodes so much.
I am particularly interested in the Pulp Empire book, as it combines two of my favorite subjects: comics and history.
The comments about Dave Cockrum and Nightcrawler reminded me of the fascinating history of Cockrum’s influence on the industry, including his proposal to add Nightcrawler to the Legion of Super-heroes universe as a part of a group called the Outsiders. And even before that, his conception of a Nightcrawler character as a sidekick to a hero called the Intruder. I don’t remember where or when I first heard some of this, but a quick internet search took me to http://legionofsuperbloggers.blogspot.com/2017/11/from-legion-to-x-men-nightcrawler-storm.html, which you’ve probably seen before. (Heck, you’ve probably contributed to it before!) This particular post from 2017 really lays it out, including some notes from Cockrum regarding Nightcrawler’s characteristics, such as baying at the moon and hissing his “S’s”.
Although I have only seen season 1 of the Titans, and wasn’t enamored with it, now that I have a subscription to HBOMax, I will get caught up and start season 3, if only to see live versions of some pretty cool characters.
Good stuff!
Cheers, Mike A.
Mike! Thanks for the feedback! I’ll be sure to read some of your comments on the next Digest. Good luck with Titans! Go in with low expectations. Haha.
Nightcrawler’s origins – as well as Storm’s – have always been fascinating. I did not know about the Intruder character however. Great research page there.
There really isn’t enough time to read all of the reference books/magazines that I own/want to own. I stumbled upon Pulp Empire on a random search for something else. Definitely a nice find!
Hope you’re well!
Peter
Peter,
I loved the segment on Phil Jimenez. He’s one of my all time favorites as well. His run on the Invisibles is what pushed the series from great to legendary for me.
And I agree with Michael this is a great format.
