  1. Peter, I just finished listening to your (and the Pretty Girl’s) review of Les Mis. I was glad to hear that you enjoyed it, and were moved by some of the performances. I went to see the movie with my wife and daughter over the holidays, and it was much anticipated by my daughter and myself because she and I went to a movie theatre to watch a broadcast of the 25th anniversary concert and we fell in love with the performances. We came out of the movie with me having liked the film, but my pretty girls not really liking it at all. My daughter is the musical theatre major, and she was not kind regarding most performers–she really only liked Jackman and the actor who played Marius. Unlike most people I’ve talked to or heard discussing this film, I actually quite liked Anne Hathaway’s performance. There were a few times where I was getting emotionally caught up in the moment when she sang. Of course, there were times during the film where I could say the same when Jackman performed. I agree with you about Crowe’s performance, but when you compare him to the Javert I saw at the 25th ann. concert (Norm Lewis), Crowe has no chance. 🙂 All in all, I look forward to rewatching the film when it’s released on DVD, but really, all it did is make me want to rewatch the 25th anniversary concert. Thanks for sharing!

  2. Thanks Eric! I responded on Feedback Friday for Jan.19. Forget to add: I’ve seen the 10th Anniversary concert but not the 25th. I’ll have to give it a watch.

  3. Great review and most interested in your take on the adaptation of the stage play to film. Haven’t seen the film but have seen two Les Mis touring companies here in Phoenix. I do remember a death bed scene with an angel in one version but not in the other. Could the musical have been changed that drastically or a scene left out? Or was it just staged differently so that it didn’t have as much of an impact on me so I didn’t remember it. I always thought a stage play was the domain of the playwright, not the director. Thanks again for your insight.
